Yenton took eleven players to the event and came away with eight trophies. There was a very high standard of competitors of all weights on the day, yet the Yenton fighters showed there strength and determination as well as a very high level of skills to do the club and themselves proud. Also on the day Cobra held a club teams event consisting of teams of six players on each team. Yenton were short of two players in the under 40kg and 45kg on the day but were able to call on the services of two players from any other club's. The team immediately enlisted the help of Rhiannan Danbury u40kg (Cobra) and Chelsea Brown u45kg (2A's) to make there team complete. The team fought extremely well to get to the finals, yet just missing out on the gold medal to achieve silver. Great atmosphere and sportsmanship throughout the day Well done all !!

Lesley Farnell won here first and second fights convincingly to go on to the final against a very tall and awkward opponent and received a Silver medal for her hard fought efforts. Out of the hole A.J.A squad which went to compete in Holland two of the three medal winners were from Yenton. Loren Ivory-Birtles female U60kg also lost her first fight on points to the girl who went on to receive Gold. It's been a busy but very rewarding few weeks for members
of the Erdington-based Yenton Judo Club.
First to hit the mats were brother and sister Jordan and Loren Ivory-Birtles when they took part in their first British Judo Council competition Junior Nationals in Hereford. Jordan won his first two contests with fantastic Ippon throws but unfortunately lost his next contest due to a poor refereeing decision. That added to Loren's determination and she showed great technique to win all of her contests and the Gold trophy and become BJC National Junior Champion 2006. Harry Hicks also struck gold when he competed in the boys' under-25kg category at a Low Grade event in Leicester. He won all his contests convincingly in front of a big club contingent, including his proud parents and his brother and sister, who are also members of Yenton.
All three were in action at the Amateur
Judo Association's Anniversary National
Open in Colchester, with Harry again winning the
under-25kg title.
Sister Danielle also won the gold trophy in the under-36kg section and brother Ashley took silver, despite having to compete in a higher weight category. Club colleague Helen Richards, competing in her first event as a senior, overcame some early nerves to win Gold in the 16/17-years category. Not satisfied with that, she then did the double by claiming gold in the Kyu grade Open event. Instructor Lesley Farnell also fought in the ladies' under-78kg event and won a silver trophy.
The coaches have also seen their students do well at the Kano
Championships, where the medal haul of 14 was exceptional.
There were gold medals for Harry Hicks, Jordan Ivory-Birtles, Ryan Farley, Loren Ivory-Birtles, Danielle Hicks, Laura Palmer, Helen Richards and James Overthrow. Silver medals went to Ashley Hicks, Jordan Palmer, Lucy Jones, Tineka Harvey and Ian Mattox and Adam Palmer won a bronze.
